Frogs are attracted to food that crawls, hops, flies or wiggles. Bottom line: you have to feed them live food. If you can't face having to handle and feed live insects, don't get a frog! One of the basic food items for frogs is crickets. You can buy them at the pet store for around $1.00 for a dozen. If you have a large frog or many frogs, the expense can add up. You can buy crickets from "cricket farms" but the smallest order is usually 500 crickets. (See the links page) You have to buy the appropriate size of crickets for your frog. If a small frog is fed large crickets it can develop digestive problems. The crickets need to be dusted with vitamins and calcium around once a week to provide more complete nutrition. Small frogs and newly morphed frogs need to be fed fruit flies. For info on fruit flies see the Ed's Fly Meat link. It is not a good idea to feed your frog "wild caught" bugs unless you can be absolutely certain that there are no pesticides, etc. in that bug! |
