Frogs as Pets

This is only some very general information about keeping frogs as pets. For more detailed information please go to the links page.

Before buying a frog, or any pet for that matter, please stop to think if you will have the time and money to take care of it. Shelters and rescue organizations are overloaded with pets that were bought on an impulse. Later the owners found that the care and expense were too much.

When getting a frog (or reptile pet), often the animal is the least expensive part of ownership. To keep your frog happy and healthy you will need:

• A terrarium large enough for the full grown animal to move and hop around
• A means of keeping the frog warm or cool enough
• If the frog lives in the water, a filtration system to clean the water or
• A water dish
• Plants and other cage "furniture" so the frog has a hiding place and feels secure
• Food! See the notes below about feeding frogs
• If you read the food and hygiene pages you will see that keeping a healthy frog involves more than just putting it in a tank!
